The first game of the season saw Adams hit the court running, as they jumped out to a 22-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. After a dominant first half, Adams led 43-14 at half time, using a 1-2-2 half court trap to create easy transition points. Contributions came from up and down the roster with 14 players scoring in the game led by McBride with14 pts and 4 rebounds, Wozniak with 8 points, Cocozzo with 7pts, and France with 7 points.
Thursday12/10/2009Brother RiceScore:38-46
The Highlanders trailed the whole way in a tough game away from home against the Brother Rice Warriors. Adams fell behind early after Rice switched to a 1-3-1 defense, and trailed 14-20 at half time. The size and quickness of Rice was a challenge for the Adams defense. Adams played a determined second half and made several runs but Rice responded each time to run out winners by 8 points. Wozniak, McBride, Limb, and France each had 8 points. Adams was not helped by poor free throw shooting, going 2 for 10 from the charity stripe.
Friday12/18/2009NOTRE DAME PREPScore:59-64
An inconsistent game from Adams saw them go down to Notre Dame in the home opener. The Irish came out Fighting, scoring 10 unanswered points to start the game and 21 points in the first quarter. Adams struggled to keep Prep out of the lane where they got every shot they wanted. Trailing 31-46 entering the 4th quarter, the Highlanders mounted a furious comeback, but although they outscored Notre Dame 27 to 18 in the final quarter, they just came up short at the end. The lead was cut to 3 and Adams had the ball with 18 seconds left, but turned it over. Turnovers – Adams had 31 - proved to be the Achilles heel, along with weak free throw shooting at 21 for 39 from the line. Limb led Adams with 14 points, followed by France with 12.
Tuesday1/5/2010ROCHESTERScore:39-28
Adams evened their record at 2-up, 2-down with a grinding performance against rivals Rochester. The Falcons slowed the pace and the score was tied at 9-9 after the 1st quarter and the game remained tight as Adams took a 1 point lead into half-time. The Highlanders found a higher gear in the second half, opening up a 7 point lead entering the fourth quarter and then clamping down on defense, allowing Rochester only one field goal in the 4th. Adams had the fewest turnovers of the year and shot 50% from the field to run out 11 point winners. McBride led all scorers with 15 points.
Friday1/8/2010STONEY CREEKScore:32-31
Another tight defensive battle against in-town rivals. Stoney played zone the entire game and forced Adams to play at a slow pace. Adams trailed most of the way, settling for too many outside shots for the first 3 quarters. With the score tied 15-15 at halftime, Stoney's Stephen Makowski scored every point for the Cougars in the 3rd and he single handedly outscored the Highlanders 12-3 for the quarter. Trailing 18-27 entering the fourth quarter, Adams rallied to the victory allowing Stoney only one field goal in the 4th quarter. A full court man-to-man press from the Highlanders in the 4th forced 6 turnovers. Q France hit 2 of 4 free throws in the last minute of the game to secure a dramatic victory. France had 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals to go along with 5 points. Britton Skinner and Tanner Kalvelage also had major contributions in the game with key defense, rebounds, and a couple of big baskets each.
Tuesday1/12/2010NO GAME
Friday1/15/2010ATHENSScore:38-33
Adams finished strongly to pull away in the fourth quarter for their fourth victory of their campaign. There was sloppy play on both sides in the first half, with Adams taking a slender 15-14 lead into halftime. A physical Athens squad took the lead after three quarters, 21-27, but then the Highlanders switched to a full court press in the fourth and made a number of key steals, particularly by France, scoring 17 points in the fourth to run out 38-33 victors. Limb led scorers with 12 points, followed by France with 10.
Tuesday1/19/2010TROYScore:58-44
It was welcome home for the Highlanders who led all the way in only their second home game of the season to extend their record to 6 wins against 2 losses. Adams led by 2 points after the first quarter and extended their lead to 13 at half, 27-14. Both offenses were cranked up in the second half with Troy making a run early in the fourth on the back of strong 3-point shooting, but Adams kept their calm to pull out to a 58-44 win. McBride contributed 15 points and France 12, with 10 players getting on the score sheet.
Thursday1/21/2010ROCHESTERScore:33-31
A tense, gritty affair ended with a narrow Adams win to complete a sweep of their crosstown rivals. Dogged by turnovers, the Highlanders trailed throughout the first half, down 4-10 after the first quarter and 15-22 at the half. The Falcons had runs of 10-0 in each of the first 2 quarters, but then Adams mounted their own 10-0 run in the third to take the lead 27-24 going into the fourth, and held on in an exciting finish to run out winners, 33-31. McBride led all scorers with 11 points, with Hurst, Limb and Wozniak each with 4 points.
Monday1/25/2010SOUTHFIELDScore:20-41
Adams' 5 game winning streak was ended by a strong, physical Southfield team. The Highlanders struggled to get off shots throughout the game, and Southfield were able to turn take-aways into easy points. Adams trailed by 4 after the first quarter, 7-11, and then by 7 at the half, 15-22. But unlike the Rochester game, Adams could not get back in the game in the second half, scoring only 3 points in the third quarter to trail 18-37, and 2 points in the fourth as Southfield ran out comfortable 20-41 winners. Wozniak hit a pair of 3-pointers and led Adams with 8 points, followed by Limb with 5 points. Adams did made 6 of 8 free throws.
Thursday1/28/2010LAKE ORIONScore:37-59
Adams fell to their fourth defeat of the season, 36-57, against a powerful Lake Orion team. The Highlanders fell behind early and trailed after the first quarter, 8-16, but played tough in the second to keep within single digits at half, 19-27. Adams started strongly in the third quarter to narrow the lead to three at one stage, but then the Dragons started creating turnovers and making shots and pulled away to a comfortable win in the end, 36-57. Adams shot 15-41 from the field, and 3-7 from the line. Gasiorowski made 3 of 3 three pointers and led scorers with 13 points. Skinner and McBride both had 4 rebounds.
Tuesday2/2/2010SEAHOLMScore:47-42
Adams returned to winning ways at Seaholm. The Highlanders came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and led 19-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Maples fought their way back into the game in the 2nd and narrowed the gap to 10 pts at the half, 29-19. Adams struggled again scoring only 4 points in the 3rd, with the lead narrowd to 6 at 33-27, but the Highlanders held on in the fourth to run out 5 point winners. Limb led scorers with 12 pts, while McBride added 8 pts and 5 rebounds. France had 6 pts and 5 steals. Adams shot 21 for 39 from the field and 4 for 11 from the line.
Friday2/5/2010GP SOUTHScore:56-47
A shorthanded Adams, without 3 players due to injury and sickness, took their record to 8-4 with a come-from-behind win on their homecourt against Gross Pointe South. Adams trailed 10-11 after the first quarter, and the Blue Devils went on a 13-0 run in the second to lead by 7 at the half, 19- 26. But the Highlanders again showed their resolve in the second half, scoring 21 points in the third quarter to take the lead 40-39, before winning the fourth quarter 16-8 and running out 9 point winners. France contributed at both ends of the floor, leading scorers with 18 points, pulling down 9 rebounds, and adding 6 steals and 5 assists. Limb had 14 points and 6 rebounds (5 offensive), Wozniak 8 points and Cocozzo 6, with Hurst providing 5 assists. Adams shot 25 for 62 from the field and 4 for 8 from the charity stripe.
Tuesday2/9/2010BERKLEYScore:56-37
Adams scored 56 points for the second consecutive game to ease to a 56-37 victory against the Berkely Bears. The Highlanders started strongly with 6 early points from France and never looked back. They led 17-10 after one, 25-15 at half time and 40-25 after three. Key to Adams' success was keeping control of the ball, committing only 8 turnovers compared to 18 assists. France led scorers with 13 points, while Limb, McBride and Skinner all had 9 points. Wozniak had 4 assists and 3 steals, while France had 7 rebounds.
Friday2/12/2010STONEY CREEKScore:52-46
Adams extended their win streak to 4 games in dramatic fashion on their home court against rivals Stoney Creek. The Cougars were seeking revenge for a narrow home court loss to the Highlanders earlier in the season, and played strongly throughout the game. A close affair for 3 quarters, Stoney led by 2 at the half, 23-25, and also after three quarters, 33-35. A Stoney surge in the fourth extended their lead to 9 points with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game, but just as the game looked to be slipping away from them, Adams turned up the intensity with a trapping defense creating 2 quick turnovers as the Highlanders ran off 9 straight points to send the game to overtime. The momentum shift continued in OT as Adams outscored their opponents 8-2 to secure the victory and a 10-4 record. Limb had 18 points including 6 in overtime along with 5 rebounds. McBride added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
Tuesday2/16/2010ATHENSScore:43-38
Adams rattled off their fifth straight win and improved their record to 11-4 with a victory at home against Troy Athens. After a slow start, Adams began to assert themselves and took a four point lead into the second, extending that to a nine point half-time lead, 24-15. The lead was stretched again early in the third to 15 at one point before Athens came back into the game with a 14-2 run. The lead was narrowed to two late in the game and the battle under the boards intensified before the Highlanders hit a key basket and forced the Hawks to start fouling. Adams made a couple of key blocks on defence and kept their cool at the line to pull off a five point victory. McBride led scorers with 14 and also had 8 boards. Hurst had 4 assists and 5 steals. Adams shot 16-49 from the floor and 9-19 from the line.
Friday2/19/2010TROYScore:37-31
Adams completed the sweep of the Troy Colts but were made to work hard for the victory. A see-saw first half ended with Adams trailing 16-18, as the Highlanders were held to just 6 points in the second quarter. Wozniak sank back-to-back buckets including a 3-pointer to take a two point lead at the end of the third quarter, 27-25. The play was intense and pyhsical in the fourth, including a technical for an intentional foul against Troy on France, who made both free throws, and Adams kept their cool to run out six point winners, 37-31. Adams shot only 13-44 from the floor but made 10-13 free throws. Point scoring was evenly spread throughout the team, with France contributing 8 points and 7 rebounds, McBride adding 8 points along with 6 rebounds, and Heim chipping in with 4 rebounds.
Tuesday2/23/2010CLARKSTONScore:53-50
Adams prevailed again in dramatic fashion to run their record to 13-4 with a 53-50 overtime victory against the Clarkston Wolves. Adams were asleep at the wheel at the start of the game as Clarkston jumped to a 9 point lead and McBride made the only two buckets in the first quarter for Adams who trailed 4-13 after one. It was another 4 minutes before Borglin made Adams' next bucket as the Highlanders turned the ball over at an alarming rate and the Highlanders still trailed by 9 at the half, 14-23, with their 13 turnovers almost matching their point score. But the second half brought renewed intensity from Adams who went on a 22-4 run in the third to take a 38-29 lead, with Wozniak and Kalvelage hitting key baskets, and Skinner taking a charge that ignited the defense. But the Wolves responded with back-to-back 3 pointers to tighten the game once again. Adams led 38-37 after three and maintained an edge throughout the fourth. They looked in control until multiple turnovers in the last 2 minutes allowed Clarkston to tie the game with 6 seconds left, 46-46. Adams could not convert on 2 final attempts and the game went to overtime. But the Highlanders kept their composure in OT, and Cocozzo hit the game-winning three pointer with 10 seconds left. McBride led scorers with 12 points, followed by Kalvelage with 10 and Wozniak with 9. Adams shot 21-46, including 5-5 from three and 6-8 from the line.
Friday2/26/2010BERKLEYScore:42-37
Adams once again had to come from behind but answered the bell in the clutch to ease past a feisty Berkley squad, 42 to 37. After Cocozzo scored the first bucket for Adams, the Bears went on a 17 point tear before France broke a long Adams drought early in the second quarter. The Highlanders switched to a 1-2-2 defense and went on their own 13-2 run to end the first half down 21 to 25. Adams still trailed 26-32 after a low scoring 3rd quarter, but the Highlanders ratcheted up the intensity in the fourth and went on another run, 13-1, with 6 straight points from Borglin, and held off a late Berkley rally to run out 5 point winners. France led scorers with 11 points, and also had 4 steals. McBride led with 5 rebounds. Adams shot 15-33 from the floor and 14-20 from the line.
Tuesday3/2/2010LAKE ORIONScore:41-46
A valiant effort fell just short as the Highlanders succumbed to a very strong Dragons team, but Adams were much improved from their 19 point loss in the first match-up at Lake Orion. Adams took an early lead after one quarter, 10-6, and went into the half tied at 17-17. McBride and France alternated baskets as Adams scored the first 8 points of the third, but Lake Orion found their outside shooting and hit 5 3-pointers to take a 2 point lead into the fourth, 33-35. The Highlanders stayed close, trailing still by 2 late in the game, but could not make the critical shots down the stretch and the Dragons made free throws to run out winners 41-46. McBride (11) and France (10) led the scoring as 9 different players got on the scoresheet. Adams shot 12-26 from 2 points, but only 3-18 from 3 point range and 8-15 free throws.
Thursday3/4/2010SEAHOLMScore:32-38
Adams ended the season on a disappointing note falling 32-38 to Seaholm in the season finale on their home court. The Highlanders dug themselves another hole, falling behind early and trailing throughout most of the game. Down 4-11 after one and 16-19 after two quarters, Adams briefly took the lead in the third at 22-21, but just as it seemed the momentum had swung to the home team, the Maples fought back with an 9-0 run and Adams came up short in one last comeback bid. Limb (10), McBride (8) and Gasiorowski (8) led the scorers, but Adams could not overcome 14-46 shooting from the field, including 0-5 in 3 pointers. But the Highlanders can look back on a very sucessful season and an overall record of 14 wins against 6 losses. They had probably the deepest bench in the league, overcoming several injuries and absences, and all 15 team members contributed in a true team effort. They proved more often than not to be clutch perfomers with a number of excting (and nerve wracking!) last gasp victories. Congratulations to all, including the hard working coaching staff!
